We’ve blogged before about the benefits of temporary working – see here and here. The summer is a great time to get your temping career started as many companies take on extra seasonal staff. But if you’ve landed a brilliant temp summer job you might be starting to think about how you can stay on permanently. Adrienne from RecruitAbility has a few tips to share to help you turn your temp job into a permanent role. Be realistic Remember that businesses usually take on temp staff to help with peak busy times. Once these periods are over there may be no permanent role available. Do some research and find out if permanent jobs ever come up and if any of your colleagues were previously temps. Be clear Remember your boss can’t read your mind. If you want to be taken on permanently, make it clear to your boss. Be professional Always dress appropriately, have a great attitude and show your enthusiasm, even if some tasks are tedious. Be reliable Make sure your boss knows that you always complete your tasks. Offer to help your colleagues as much as possible so that you make an impression as a team player people can rely on. Be proactive Don’t think that just because you are a temp you should keep your ideas to yourself. If you have good suggestions then share them politely with your co-workers. Make friends with your colleagues Even though you may only be there a few weeks always make the effort to get to know the people you work with. If there is a permanent role available you’ll have your colleagues’ support and they will probably put a good word in for you. If you behave with the same commitment and professionalism as a permanent employee you stand a much better chance of being able to turn that great summer temp job into a full-time career opportunity.
