How to find a great summer job

As the summer term gets going students start to think about finding a job for the long holidays. Whether you want to pick up some experience for your future career or just to earn some extra cash, Wendy at RecruitAbility has some advice to help you find a great job.

Many companies offer summer opportunities so before you begin think about what you want to do. If you want to work for a large retailer or for a travel company such as PGL they begin their summer recruitment processes early - keep an eye on their websites so you don’t miss out. If you will be looking for something close to home research the possibilities – businesses such as restaurants, hotels and tourist attractions will all be recruiting seasonal staff. Local holiday camps and summer schools will be looking for people to work with children – these jobs can be fun and look great on your CV. Many companies offer admin or clerical work over the summer which can pay well and give you useful experience of office life.

Once you’ve decided what you’d like to do make sure your CV and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date. Companies employing students accept that you won’t have a lot of work experience but make sure you showcase your skills and any relevant experiences you have had. Network if you can – businesses are more likely to take on casual staff on a personal recommendation.

Use a reputable recruitment agency – at RecruitAbility we are always looking for good quality temps over the summer and can offer a variety of office-based roles to students returning for the summer. Watch out for scams – legitimate recruitment agencies will never ask you for money to register or for any other purpose.

If you are invited for an interview be enthusiastic and engaging, even if the role is not your dream job. Once you are in place make the most of the opportunity. Even the most mundane jobs can be rewarding and all of them will give you excellent experience to improve your CV and help you in your future career.
